Search and Seizure Update / "It's too hard"- Demystifying Financial Cases

DOJ Assistant Attorney in Charge of Criminal Appeals Appellate Division Andrew Lavin and DOJ Senior Assistant Attorney General Appellate Division Leigh Salmon will provide an interactive update on recent case law regarding searches and seizures.  Specific topics will include traffic and investigative stops, search warrants, and exceptions to the warrant requirement.  Sgt. Jan Kubic from the Special Investigations Unit of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office will discuss practical approaches that police officers can use to work with that case law.

In the afternoon DOJ Special Agent Jodi Shimanek will be discussing financial cases and many of the commonly used tools to assist officers and investigators when working any case involving finances.  Special Agent Shimanek will help you hone your skills and make seemingly difficult cases easier to manage.  She will be covering how to obtain bank records (subpoenas, petition/orders of non-disclosure, search warrants), freezing accounts (Temporary Restraining Orders, account seizure), FinCEN-Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and Activity Reports.
