BRIEF Overview: Discussions on the neurobiology of trauma and how it affects victims of sexual assault, photographing injury evidence, drug facilitated assault, explanation of the SAFE process, victim care and assistance and investigator and prosecutor tips and best practices for a successful prosecution provided by a current Chief Deputy District Attorney.

Pre-requisites: None.

Attire: Business casual.

Supplies/Equipment Needed: Note taking supplies if desired.  Handouts will be provided.

Shalotta Sharp, RN, SANE of the Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault will be teaching attendees the importance of a detailed history regarding physical injuries that occur during the sexual assault.  One of the objectives of this module will be investigation of the victim of strangulation.  The attendees will also learn about bite marks on victims and their evidentiary value. Forensic photography and its  importance to the investigation as well as the judicial process will be discussed.  The attendees will also learn the latest trend in DFSA (drug facilitated sexual assault) including interaction of street drugs with over the counter medication and prescription medication.  

The medical findings or lack of medical findings will be discussed and their implications on the investigation.  Sexual maturation will be discussed.  Facts and myths regarding genital trauma related to a sexual assault will be discussed.  The attendees will learn the steps incorporated in a medical history that can assist the Law Enforcement personnel in their investigation.  Medical terms commonly used in forensic medical exams will be discussed.  The attendee will also learn interviewing skills to apply when obtaining a statement from a victim of a sex crime. 

Polk County Chief Deputy DA Jayme Kimberly will discuss best investigator and prosecution practices for a successful prosecution.

Abby's House and Sable House will provide information on resources available to victims of sexual assault and how they can assist law enforcement.
