Larry Gordon, Dallas Police Department 

Larry Gordon started his career with the Dallas Police Department in 1995. In June of 1997 Larry was selected to be a part of the Dallas Police Department's Specialized Crime Unit. After several productive years with the Specialized Crime Unit, Larry transferred to the Narcotics Division.  Larry was the lead Detective on countless narcotic investigations.

In 2004, Larry transferred to the Dallas Police Department’s coveted SWAT Team where he is currently assigned.  Larry currently serves as one of the lead negotiators for the SWAT team.  He has successfully negotiated peaceful resolutions to armed barricaded subjects.  Larry has also negotiated operations where a sniper/Tactical resolution had to be used to bring the volatile situations to an end, including the 2016 incident where 5 Dallas Police Officers lost their lives during a protest in downtown Dallas.

Larry is also responsible for training swat officers and certifying them in tear gas/less lethal munitions and distraction devices. He is also an Active shooter/ALERRT (advanced law enforcement rapid response training) instructor.

Larry earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of North Texas and has been certified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) as an instructor.                          

Brief Overview:

Regardless of an agency or officers individual views of de-escalation tactics, it MUST be implemented into every police departments training program.  Many officers believe that the use of de-escalation techniques will jeopardize their safety and place them at a tactical disadvantage.  In reality, the proper use of de-escalation has the complete opposite effect.  Statistics and studies will show that it actually increases officers’ safety and places the officer in a more advantageous tactical position.

This one day training class will provide officers with the necessary tools to properly de-escalate a situation, while maintaining a tactical mindset.  Officers will learn effective techniques for communicating under stress, without escalating a situation.  Practical, classroom based scenarios will be presented to demonstrate these concepts.  Information will also be presented on the development of reality-based, simunition training involving de-escalation techniques.  This information will give officers a jump start on implementing de-escalation training within their own police departments.

This course was developed by two veteran instructors from one of the largest police departments in the United States.  Both instructors have used de-escalation techniques in critical incidents and hostile environments for most of their careers.
