Brief Overview:

• A brief over view of how Polk County, using the Sequential Intercept Model (SIM) and state funding, developed programs that address recidivism with those individuals that experience a severe and persistent mental illness.  Presentation will review pitfalls and successes.
• Information on symptoms and behaviors officers may observe when dealing with individuals with mental illness.  It will provide insight on the personal experiences and the impact these disorders have on those that have them.   Lastly, we will review techniques that are particularly helpful when addressing a person who is symptomatic.
• The impact of trauma on our youth.  It looks at the ACES study and discusses how traumatized youth, without interventions, grow up to be our criminal justice system’s troubled adults.  We will address how officers, often times being that first line of defense, can help create change.
• Pitfalls of getting wrapped up in the behaviors and attitudes of the individuals we respond to.  We will look at how to more effectively address difficulty behaviors while reducing our own stress, decreasing risk of personal injury, and risk of unneeded force ultimately reducing liability.
